Meeting Minutes
Attendees: Scott Marshall, Mike McGiveney, Robert Rheault, Dale Leavitt, Marta Gomez- Chiarri, Tom McKenna (USDA), Lauren Harris (USDA) and David Beutel
Call to order. A. Livingston called the first meeting of the Subcommittee to order at 4:15 p.m.
Discussion: shellfish disease monitoring program:
- Funding from USDA ($4500)
- Sentinel Program using standard tests
- Work to leverage with other disease testing programs (EQIP)
- Six sites: Winnapaug, Quonochontaug, Ninigret, Point Judith, Bissel Cove, RWU
- Oysters obtained between September 15 and 30.
- Log temperature and salinity
- RWU Lab to conduct tests
Vase tunicate discussion:
- Project to determine temperature tolerance
- Tunicates from Maine
- 48 hour quarantine required to purge tunicate
- Research conducted at GSO aquarium
- Post project water treatment before release (Marta will contact with protocol)
New business:
- Tal Ben-Horin research project raising Bulgao; Dave will contact for scheduling presentation to describe project; BioSecurity Board will make a recommendation to the Director
- Kelp species for aquaculture; Skid to contact Matt Green at DEM to verify native kelp species
