The Town of Narragansett would like to invite you to participate in its first ever Dune Restoration Project

Event is scheduled for Saturday March 29, 2008 at 9:00 am Rain or Shine. All volunteers will meet at the town beach just north of the pavilion the day of the event.

Dune Restoration Plan (very large image)

Help restore the dunes by volunteering for the dune restoration team. As part of the dune restoration, we will add stabilizing vegetation to the growing dunes at Narragansett Town beach in order to allow the plantings to reclaim the sand and set the stage for a healthy dune ecosystem. No experience necessary. Training, tools, refreshments, camaraderie and beautiful scenery are provided.

Human Hands are the Tools of Restoration

Add glove and shovels to human hands, and you have the strongest dune restoration tool around. Our method of planting has minimal impacts to the dunes, and thus native plants as well as newly introduced beach grass are able to repopulate the dunes.

Mission Statement

The Town of Narragansett is dedicated to conserving the natural diversity of coastal environments through community supported education and restoration programs. In this pilot program it is the town’s intentions to build awareness of the importance of the coastal ecosystem through this isolated trial project to monitor the impact and effects of human involvement.

Goals

  • Provide community education that instills understanding, appreciation and inspires conservation of coastal environments.
  • Build community-based restoration programs that serve to maintain and enhance the natural diversity of coastal environments.
  • Create an effective and efficient organization capable of conserving coastal environments in perpetuity.
  • Nurture the existing dune systems that protect native plants and animals.

Please feel free to contact the Town of Narragansett Engineering Department with any questions you may have, and pass this e-mail on to any individuals or parties that may be interested in participating.

Thank you and we hope to see you there,
