CRMC, RI Sea Grant sponsor 28th Annual Coastweeks
September 23, 2009, WAKEFIELD – The Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council and the Rhode Island Sea Grant College Program invite the general public and other interested environmentalists-in-training to take part in more than four weeks of fun and hands-on environmental education and stewardship at the 28th Annual Coastweeks event.
Coastweeks 2009: A Celebration of the Coast, which runs from September 18 until October 22, is sponsored by CRMC and RI Sea Grant, and is dedicated to fostering awareness, understanding and improved management of the coast. The annual celebration features events like statewide cleanups, harbor tours and day cruises, watercolor workshops, historic lighthouse tours, lectures and cooking demonstrations.
This year, the CRMC is offering a talk on hurricanes, sea level rise and other coastal hazards on October 15, at 7 p.m. at the North Kingstown Free Library. The talk, “Angry Seas: Impacts of Hurricanes and Nor’easters on Rhode Island’s Shoreline,” is free to the public, but seating is limited. To RSVP or for more information, contact Laura Ricketson-Dwyer at CRMC at lricketson@crmc.ri.gov.
“The CRMC is delighted to be sponsoring Coastweeks along with RI Sea Grant again this year,” said CRMC Chairman Michael M. Tikoian. “Coastweeks is an excellent opportunity for the environmental experts to educate and interact with the public, and it’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors and learn about the coastal environment. We’re excited about showcasing our latest habitat restoration project, as well as our other coastal programs.”
Aquaculture coordinator David Beutel is also conducting a book discussion of Elizabeth Kolbert’s Field Notes From a Catastrophe about the causes and effects of global climate change, current research and America’s reluctance in global efforts to reduce carbon emission. The discussion is on October 19 at the North Kingstown Free Library at 7 p.m. and is free to the public. The library is located at 100 Boone St. For more information, call the library (401) 294-3306.
