This fall, celebrate Rhode Island’s coast!

September 2, 2014, NARRAGANSETT – Join us for Rhode Island’s annual Coastweeks celebration of the coast. Events take place from September 24 until October 7. This year, five Coastweeks events are happening from North Kingstown to Westerly.

• On September 24, join Kevin Cute of the R.I. Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) and search for aquatic invasive species at Point Judith Pond in Narragansett. 
  
  
• On September 27, take a walking tour of the beach in Misquamicut with Janet Freedman of CRMC and Pam Rubinoff of the URI Coastal Resources Center (CRC) and Rhode Island Sea Grant. You will learn about the erosion issues on that shoreline and the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.
  
  
• On October 2, Teresa Crean of CRC and Rhode Island Sea Grant will lead a walking tour of Wickford Harbor and discuss how waterfront businesses and residents are being affected by sea level rise and flooding.
  
  
• On October 3, Caitlin Chaffee of CRMC and Charlie Vandemoer of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will lead a walking tour of the Narrow River salt marsh, and describe upcoming restoration efforts and how climate change and sea level rise are affecting coastal marshes.
  
  
• On October 7, join Bryan Oakley of Eastern Connecticut State University for a guided tour of the geology of Napatree Point in Westerly and learn about how storms have changed the barrier beach—and moved it 200 feet to the north.

Coastweeks is an annual celebration designed to foster public awareness of Rhode Island’s shores, their diverse uses, and their need for careful management. Coastweeks is coordinated by the R.I.
