...to preserve, protect, develop, and restore coastal resources for all Rhode Islanders
Boating Safety Day event held at Brewers Cove Haven Marina in Barrington
May 22, 2010 – The event, organized and hosted by the marina, the City of East Providence Harbormaster, Town of Barrington Harbormaster, and US Coast Guard, included the participation of 21 organizations and 13 vessels.
The CRMC’s R/V Jack Reed was one of the vessels. CRMC Dredge Coordinator Dan Goulet and Brian Oakley of URI provided tours and information on the vessel, its on-board equipment including side-scan sonar, and information about some of the tasks the CRMC staff undertake on the research vessel, including work for the Ocean SAMP. The CRMC also had a table displaying a number of established aquatic invasive species such as the Asian Green Crab, as well as its larger-than-life-sized Chinese Mitten Crab puppet. Niels Hobbs, Aquatic Invasive Species field coordinator for the Rhode Island Aquatic Invasive Species Management Plan, donned the puppet suit and spoke to the public about the fight to stop the spread of aquatic invasive species in the state.
